Parties and candidates

Hans Hedtoft led the Social Democrats as the top candidate. Despite the majority of the votes, he could not be elected head of government (minister of state) because the liberals formed a minority government with the support of the other parties (except communists) after the election.

The Liberals went into the elections with Knud Kristensen as the top candidate and, despite a lower number of votes than the Social Democrats, were subsequently able to nominate Kristensen as the Prime Minister of Denmark.

The Conservatives started the race with incumbent Foreign Minister John Christmas Møller at their head.

The Communists entered the running with Aksel Larsen as the top candidate and, with 18 seats, returned to the Danish state parliament, from which they had disappeared due to the ban on the activities of the Communist Party in Germany-occupied Denmark on August 22, 1941. These 18 seats also represent the best election results for the Communists to date.
