Folk election 1971
The parliamentary elections in Denmark in 1971 for the election of the members of the Folketing , the Parliament of Denmark , took place on September 21, 1971 in Denmark and on October 5, 1971 in the Faroe Islands .
background
The Folketing was dissolved four months before the end of the legislative period, on the one hand to avoid unpopular elections in winter and on the other hand to get a clear vote of the voters regarding the accession of Denmark to the European Community .
The previous government was formed by a coalition of the Conservative People's Party (C), the Radical Venstre (R) and the Liberal Party (V), which had 73 seats. The opposition Social Democrats (S) took 62 seats.
In addition to these four parties, six other parties presented candidates for this parliamentary election, but only one of these parties, the Socialistisk Folkeparti (F), managed to win seats.
A total of around 900 candidates ran for seats in parliament. The campaign was very short, less than a month. The main topics of this election campaign were the economic situation and Denmark's application to join the EC, but neither of the two camps was able to score decisive points. While the government coalition had to accept losses in public opinion due to the budget deficit and the public rejection of austerity measures that had occurred since 1969, the Social Democrats were internally divided on the question of joining the EC, with the Socialistisk Folkeparti as the only party against joining.
Election result
The Christian People's Party (KrF), founded in 1970, probably also contributed to the defeat of the previous coalition. With her position against the relaxation of the pornography and abortion laws, she was able to win voters from the right and from the center.
The winners of the election with over 37% of the vote and thus 70 seats in the Folketing were the Social Democrats. Its chairman, Jens Otto Krag , took office as the new Prime Minister on October 11, 1971.
