In the parliamentary elections in Greenland in 1987 on May 26th, 27 seats in the Inatsisartut or Landsting, the Greenland parliament, had to be filled for the first time . Previously only 25 seats were available.

Starting position

As in the 1984 parliamentary elections, it was an early election. Initially, in March 1987, due to numerous differences of opinion between the two coalitionists in the Motzfeldt III cabinet, speculation was raised about the Siumut's dismissal of the two Inuit ministers Ataqatigiit. Talks were also held with the opposition Atassut to form a new government. However, this was only ready to tolerate a minority government of the Siumut, which Prime Minister Jonathan Motzfeldt rejected. As a result, new elections were called on March 10, 1987 for May 26.

Result

The right-wing liberal party Atassut and the social democratic Siumut became the strongest factions in Inatsisartut, followed by the Inuit Ataqatigiit . The Issittup Partiia entered parliament for the first time with one seat.

The governing parties after this election are marked with a dot (•).
