General election in Greenland 1963
On June 28, 1963, elections to Grønlands Landsråd were held for the fourth time . The number of eligible voters was 15,170. The turnout was low at 54.1%. Four years earlier, 58% had cast their vote.
Suffrage
In each of the 16 constituencies, there were two to seven candidates for election, of which the candidate with the highest number of votes ( relative majority ) was elected. In addition, a compensation mandate could be obtained for a party or list if their candidates together achieved more than one sixteenth of the valid votes cast. However, as in the previous elections, most of the candidates were independent individual candidates.
Starting position
In the Greenlandic Landsråd elected in 1959, there were 16 independent members who were elected by majority vote in the same number of constituencies. The Landshøvding Greenland chaired the National Council, but was not a member of parliament. Until 1960 this was Poul Hugo Lundsteen , who was replaced interim by Finn Nielsen . The latter was followed by Niels Otto Christensen after two years in 1962 .

List results
In order to receive a compensation mandate, a list had to receive more than 500 votes. No party or list did that. Thus no compensation mandate was given.
consequences
In this election, no compensation mandate was awarded for the last time, so that only 16 independent or directly elected candidates from the constituencies received a seat in parliament. Half of the MPs sat in parliament in the previous term and were re-elected.
From 1951 until the beginning of the legislative period in 1967, Landshøvding Greenland was the chairman of the National Council. This office was held by Niels Otto Christensen for the entire legislative period .
