Filippo Baldi (born January 10, 1996 in Vigevano ) is an Italian tennis player .

Career

Filippo Baldi started playing tennis when he was 9 years old. He already attracted attention on the ITF Junior Tour. He reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open in 2013 and at Wimbledon in 2014 . In 2014 he was also in the top four in doubles at the US Open . In 2012, Baldi and Gianluigi Quinzi won the Junior Davis Cup against Australia - for the first time ever for Italy. At the beginning of 2013 he achieved his best ranking as a junior with rank 5 in the junior world ranking.

In 2013 he played for the first time regularly tournaments of the third-class ITF Future Tour with the professionals and was able to finish in singles and doubles in the top 1000 of the world rankings . He won his first match on the higher endowed ATP Challenger Tour in 2014 against Dennis Novak in Milan , after receiving a wildcard from the tournament management. Until the end of 2016, the Italian did not manage to improve significantly in the world rankings and stagnated between 800 and 500 in singles and doubles, although he won seven futures in doubles.

In 2017 he finally made a small breakthrough. In singles, he won his first two future titles in Tunisia and made it to the semi-finals at the Challenger in Andria . In doubles, he moved into the final of the Challenger in Milan , so that at the end of the year he cracked the top 400 singles and the top 300 doubles. Thanks to his improved ranking, Baldi was able to compete more regularly at Challengers in 2018 and often survived the first round there. In doubles he triumphed in Todi alongside Andrea Pellegrino for the first time in a Challenger. Curiously, the pairing only had to play one more match before the final win in the match tie-break against Pedro Martínez and Mark Vervoort , as their opponents withdrew twice before the encounter. He reached the highlight of his career so far in May, when he moved into the main draw after winning the qualification of the Masters in Rome against the top 100 players Márton Fucsovics and Guillermo García-López and thus celebrated his premiere on the ATP World Tour . There he was defeated by the Georgian Nikolos Bassilaschwili in three sentences . In October he won his first individual title on the Challenger Tour in Ismaning . Due to this success he achieved his best single placement with the 176th place, in the doubles he is with the 240th place within the top 300.
