Life

Early life

Aleqa Hammond was born in Narsaq, South Greenland, to Piitaaraq Johansen and Ane-Marie Hammond and grew up in Uummannaq, North Greenland . Her father died hunting when Aleqa was seven years old. At the age of 15 she began to travel the world alone. At 25, she had already visited 50 countries. She speaks seven languages including German. In 2005 she married the Danish museum director in Qaqortoq Georg Nyegaard. Later she was in a relationship with Tom Ostermann.

She attended high school in Aasiaat from 1985 to 1987 . She then moved to Iqaluit , Canada , where she trained as a three-year teacher. In 1990 she returned to Greenland and started working for Greenland Tourism and later Nuuk Tourism . From 1999 to 2002 she was commissioner of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference . She then became head of tourism in Qaqortoq until 2005.

Political career

In 2005 she let herself be elected in parliamentary elections without any clue about politics and was elected to Inatsisartut with the fifth most votes for the Siumut and was then appointed Minister of Family and Justice. In 2007 she became Minister of Finance and Foreign Affairs. After a year she resigned because she believed the budget was irresponsible. After the debacle for her party in the 2009 parliamentary elections, she took over the party chairmanship from Hans Enoksen . In 2013 she was able to lead the Siumut back to an election victory and became Greenland's first female Prime Minister. In the coalition with the Atassut and Partii Inuit , she was also foreign minister. She tried to increase Greenland's economy by exploiting the natural resources. On October 1, 2014, she resigned after it became public that she first incorrectly calculated over 100,000 kroner (14,000 euros) from budget funds and then failed to reimburse it for a year and a half, and that Atassut had left the government. At the same time, she also gave the party chairmanship to Kim Kielsen . In the following parliamentary election she did not run again.

In 2015 she was elected to the Folketing for the Siumut . In August 2016 it became known that she had again paid for private purchases with her Folketing credit card. Her party let her decide whether to step down from her Folketing seat or to be expelled from the party. Aleqa Hammond eventually became a non-party in the Danish parliament. In April 2018 she joined Vittus Qujaukitsoq's new party, Nunatta Qitornai , and from then on represented them in the Folketing. In the same month she ran for the Inatsisartut election and reached the first place of her party. Since Vittus Qujaukitsoq was appointed minister, she moved up to the Inatsisartut for him and thus held a double mandate. In the 2019 Folketing election, she was unable to defend her place in the Folketing, despite a respectable success for her small party.

On July 20, 2013 she received the Nersornaat in gold.
