Jakob Edvard Kuupik Vandersee Kleist (born March 31, 1958 in Qullissat as Jakob Edvard Geisler ) is a Greenlandic politician ( Inuit Ataqatigiit ). He was Prime Minister of Greenland from 2009 to 2013 .

Life

Early life

Kleist was born in Qullissat as the illegitimate child of the deaf and mute Anne Marie Geisler and a Danish craftsman. He was later adopted by his uncle Nikolaj Kleist and his mother's sister, Bertiaraq. The actress Makka Kleist (* 1951) is the biological daughter of his adoptive parents. He lives with his partner Aviâja Vandersee and three common children and two stepchildren in Nuuk .

In Qullissat he attended elementary school from 1966 to 1972. He then went to secondary school in Sisimiut from 1972 to 1975 and then from 1975 to 1978 to the state school in Birkerød, Denmark . In 1983 he completed his studies as a socionomist at Roskilde University .

From 1985 to 1988 he was Vice Director of the Greenland Education Directorate. He then headed the Greenlandic journalism training program until 1999. From 1996 to 1999 he was also director of the Greenland Foreign Ministry.

Political career

His political career began when he was appointed Greenlandic Minister for Housing and Technology in 1991. A year later he became Minister of Public Works and Transport. In 1995 he was elected to the Inatsisartut . Because of his appointment as director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he left parliament the following year.

From 1995 to 1997 he was an administrative member of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference . He was chairman of TELE Greenland and the record company Ulo . From 2000 to 2001 he was secretary of the Selvstyre Commission and from 2004 its member.

From 2001 to 2007 Kuupik Kleist was one of the two Greenland MPs in the Danish Folketing . In 2005 he was re-elected to the Inatsisartut. In 2007 he was appointed leader of the Inuit Ataqatigiit. Under him, the party achieved a landslide victory in 2009, which for the first time meant that the Siumut could no longer provide the head of government. Instead, Kuupik Kleist became Prime Minister. In the 2013 election, the Siumut was again the strongest party. In 2014, he handed over the position of party leader to Sara Olsvig after being criticized for advising companies on investment opportunities in Greenland. In 2014 he no longer took part in the election.

Kuupik Kleist is also known as a musician and is referred to as the "Greenlandic answer to Leonard Cohen ". In 2017 he received the Ebbe Munck Prize. On May 17, 2010 he was awarded the Nersornaat in gold.
