Makka Kleist

Makka Kleist (born December 25, 1951 in Qullissat ) is a Greenlandic actress .

Life

Makka Kleist is the youngest daughter of Nikolaj Kleist and his wife Bertiaraq. She has a brother and three sisters. Three other siblings died young. Her cousin Kuupik Kleist (* 1958) was adopted by her parents. She attended school in her hometown and was sent to Denmark when she was twelve to attend a school in Odsherred . Then she went to the Efterskole in Aasiaat and then to the secondary school in Nuuk . She then spent a year in Orange County , California through the American Field Service .

After school she began to work as an interpreter in the district and regional court, but then went to Denmark for further training. She then did several odd jobs and then began to study at the Frederiksberg seminary . During her studies, she moved to Ilinniarfissuaq and finished her studies there. A performance by the Tuukkaq theater group reminded her of her childhood dream of becoming an actress . After completing her teacher training, she began training as an actor at Tuukkaq Teatret in Fjaltring . After five years, she left the theater and moved to Toronto , where she joined a Native American theater company. In 1986 she got a role in the film Mistress Madeleine as part of the Daughters of the Country series . In 1987 she was the sole actress in the Tomson Highway- written play Aria . At a performance of the work in London , an agent from the Royal Shakespeare Theater offered her any role and she considered accepting the role of Lady Macbeth , but then canceled to return to Greenland to look after her father, who lived in Narsaq . In the absence of acting roles, she began to work as a teacher. However, the job did not fulfill her and so she joined the Greenland drama group Silamiut in Nuuk . She starred in the play Aari , which was performed in Denmark and Norway. She was discovered by Sven B. Syrin and began to appear with him in Tromsø in 1990 in the theater group Sampoteatret . When Syrin left the theater, Makka ran it. At times she also performed at Hålogaland-teatret . In 2004 Syrin and Makka moved to Greenland together, where Syrin became head of Silamiut . From 2007 to 2016 Makka Kleist was head of Greenlandic acting training. In 2011 she received the Greenland Culture Prize . In addition to roles in several Greenlandic film productions, she had a supporting role in the 2013 Hollywood film The Amazing Life of Walter Mitty . In addition, she continues to work as a stage actress.
