Lucille Andrea George-Wout (born February 26, 1950 in Curaçao ) is a Dutch politician and has been the governor of the autonomous country of Curaçao since 2013 .

biography

After finishing school on Curaçao, George-Wout went to the European Netherlands to study at the Catholic Social Academy in Sittard . After training as a youth and social worker, she returned to her home country, where she worked in various functions in the field of youth and family work from 1971. In 1979 she became a member of the Partido MAN , for which she sat between 1980 and 1984 and between 1986 and 1990 in the island council of Curaçao. From 1980 to 1984 and 1986 to 1988 she also represented Curaçao as a member of the Staten van de Nederlandse Antilles , the parliament of the then Netherlands Antilles . Here she mainly dealt with topics such as financial and social policy as well as housing construction.

After a break within MAN, she initially withdrew from politics for some time. In 1993 she was one of the co-founders of the Partido Antiá Restructureá (PAR), as a member of which she became the first female parliamentary chairman of the Staten van de Nederlandse Antilles in 1994 . She also held the post of Speaker of Parliament between 1994 and 1998. As a result, she took on a cabinet post as Minister for Labor and Social Affairs in 1999, which she held until 2001.

After the resignation of Governor Frits Goedgedrag in November 2012, the search for suitable candidates to succeed him began. Ideally, they should be female and able to serve two full terms of six years each. George-Wout was considered the most promising of a total of ten possible candidates and was ultimately nominated for the post by Ronald Plasterk , the Dutch Minister for the Interior and Overseas Territories. After confirmation by the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom of the Netherlands , she began her first term on November 4, 2013.
