Frits Goedgedrag

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Frits Martinus de los Santos Goedgedrag (born November 1, 1951 in Oranjestad , Aruba ) is a Dutch politician. He was both the last incumbent governor of the Netherlands Antilles and, after its dissolution, the first governor of the newly formed autonomous country of Curaçao within the Kingdom of the Netherlands .

biography

Frits Goedgedrag was born in 1951 on the island of Aruba, which at that time still belonged to the Netherlands Antilles. His political career began in the legal department of the government of the autonomous country. In the 1980s he worked as government secretary for the Bonaire Territory , and was appointed administrator ( gezaghebber ) in 1992. In 2000 Goedgedrag received the post of Attorney General of the Netherlands Antilles, which he held for two years. In 2002 he was appointed governor of the Antilles. Following the parliamentary elections in the following year, Goedgedrag refused to give the election winner Anthony Godett the mandate to form a government and thus triggered a political crisis in the country. The background at this time was ongoing criminal investigations against Godett - there were allegations of corruption and fraud - which made the candidate appear unsuitable for the post of Prime Minister in Goedgedrag's eyes. After lengthy negotiations, Godett's sister Mirna was finally appointed as the new Prime Minister.

As the last governor of the Netherlands Antilles, Goedgedrag supervised the dissolution of the country on October 10, 2010. After this was completed, he became the first governor of the now autonomous country of Curaçao. He held the post until November 24, 2012, when he resigned on health grounds. Acting successor was his deputy Adèle van der Pluijm-Vrede , in November 2013 he was permanently replaced by Lucille George-Wout . After resigning as governor, he became a member of the Raad van Advies of Aruba, and since May 2013 he has also been a State Councilor in extraordinary service.
