First edition from April 16, 1915.

Norðlýsið [ ˈnoəɹlʊisɪ ] ( Faroese : the northern lights ) is a weekly newspaper in the Faroe Islands . It appears in Klaksvík and is designed as a regional newspaper for the North Islands .

Norðlýsið appeared for the first time on April 16, 1915 (at that time in Danish because there were no letters for the letter ð in the print shop). The article on the first page campaigned passionately against the First World War that was raging in Europe. He closes with the words:

The sea gave, the sea took - Praise be to the name of the sea! (Faroese proverb)
The war took, the war took - Damn the name of the war!

From the beginning it was intended as a politically independent newspaper. Norðlýsið has a circulation of around 2,000 copies and two permanent editors . There are also a number of freelance workers .

In contrast to the two "big" newspapers Dimmalætting and Sosialurin , Norðlýsið has a website where all articles are freely accessible. This is kept up-to- date , but unlike portal.fo primarily reflects news from Klaksvík's point of view. There is an open readers' forum (kjak) and online surveys (atkvøð) on current topics of the day.

On October 26, 2005, Norðlýsið announced that there should be a regional edition for the northern part of the island of Eysturoy . This step was justified with the approaching opening of the North Island Tunnel , which will bring the East Island and the North Islands closer together.
