The Sosialurin [ soˈsjalʊrɪn ] (literally “The Social”) is the second largest daily newspaper in the Faroe Islands and is based in Tórshavn .

Sosialurin is published five times a week from Tuesday to Saturday with a national circulation of 8,100 copies. This means that it reaches almost half of the approximately 17,000 Faroese households. Together with Føroya Tele , the Faroese Telecom, he is also responsible for the supply of news on the country's most important Internet portal portal.fo .

The actual website of the newspaper is www.sosialurin.fo. It is only fully visible to subscribers. It has this in common with competitor and market leader Dimmalætting . When “Dimma” announced in April 2005 that it would in future be distributing its printed Tuesday edition in the Faroe Islands free of charge, Sosialurin did not go along with it.

history

The first edition appeared on May 24, 1927 under the title Føroya Social Demokratie (" Social Democrat of the Faroe Islands") as the party newspaper of Javnaðarflokkurin (founded 1925 ). From 1945 to 1955 the name was Føroya Sosial-Demokratur . The foreign word "social" ( Danish spelling ) is written sosial in Faroese and gave its name to the current title Sosialurin.

The name of the loan word is composed as follows: Sosial-ur-in . Sosial is the (foreign language) stem, -only the male nominative ending and -in the attached specific article . If the name is inflected, it appears in the accusative as sosial-in and in the dative as sosial-inum .

This name was voted the funnest company name in the world in Norway in April 2005 . There it is misunderstood as “social urine ”. The emphasis on the name excludes this interpretation, however, since the ending -urin is unstressed and there is no paragraph to the preceding syllable, cf. German: socialeren . Urine is called vatn (water) or land (land) in Faroese .

At the beginning of 2006 the Javnaðarflokkurin parted ways with his house paper. The newspaper is now owned by the Faroese telephone company Føroya Tele .
