State government Marita Petersen
The state government headed by Marita Petersen as Prime Minister was the seventeenth government of the Faroe Islands after achieving internal self-government ( heimastýri ) in 1948.
government
The government was formed on April 24, 1993 and existed until September 10, 1994. It was a three-party coalition, which consisted of Javnaðarflokkurin , Tjóðveldisflokkurin and Sjálvstýrisflokkurin . Marita Petersen from Javnaðarflokkurin headed the government as Prime Minister. In addition, she was also responsible for foreign affairs and justice. Finnbogi Isakson from Tjóðveldisflokkurin was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economy, Thomas Arabo from Javnaðarflokkurin Minister of Fisheries and Industry, Jóannes Eidesgaard from Javnaðarflokkurin Minister of Social Affairs, Health and Labor, Signar Hansen from Tjóðveldisflokkurin Minister of Environment, Energy and Municipal and finally Bergur Jacobsen vom Sjálvstýrisflokkurin Minister for Culture, Education and Nordic Affairs.
During the time of the state government of Marita Petersen, the climax of the severe economic crisis that the Faroe Islands went through since the early 1990s also fell. There were violent clashes between the governments in Copenhagen and Tórshavn.
Marita Petersen from Javnaðarflokkurin had already been Prime Minister for a short time in the previous government , but only took over the unchanged cabinet of Atli Dam. When the government was reorganized in April 1993 under their leadership, the two-party coalition of Javnaðarflokkurin and Fólkaflokkurin was replaced by a three-party coalition of Javnaðarflokkurin, Tjóðveldisflokkurin and Sjálvstýrisflokkurin. However, the coalition partners suffered a bitter defeat in the parliamentary elections on July 7, 1994, especially Javnaðarflokkurin, whose seats in parliament were halved. That sealed the end of the government.
Marita Petersen was the first and so far only woman in the history of the Faroe Islands to hold the office of Løgmaður .
