German federal governments are the governments of the Federal Republic of Germany founded in 1949 . Articles 62 to 69 of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany regulate their composition and competencies .

The governments during the “ Weimar Republic ” (1919–1933) and the “ Third Reich ” (1933–1945) were called Reich governments . In the German Empire of the Imperial Era (1871-1919) there was no collegial government, only the Chancellor as the responsible minister . The government of the revolutionary German Empire from 1848/49 was called the provisional central authority or the entire Reich Ministry .

The term of office of the Federal Ministers is given , which begins with their appointment by the Federal President and ends with the constitution of a newly elected German Bundestag or with the discharge of office by the Federal Chancellor ( e.g. through his resignation ). The cabinet remains in office until a newly formed federal government takes office.
