Finnur Helmsdal

Finnur Mikkjalsson Helmsdal (born April 20, 1952 in Tórshavn , Faroe Islands , † December 5, 2008 there ) was a Faroese politician of the left Republicans ( Tjóðveldisflokkurin ).

Finnur was the son of Olivia Petrina and Mikkjal Á. Helmsdal. He was married to Jórun Højgaard from Vestmanna . They have four children together and lived in Hoyvík .

Helmsdal graduated in 1980 as a social worker and in 1998 his MA in history and cultural history. He not only worked in various social institutions, particularly the disabled and on gesamtnordischer Disabled political level but also at the same time as a sports journalist. He is the author of the standard work on the Faroe-Austria football match in 1990 ( see there ).

1998–2002 Helmsdal was a member of Løgting as a representative for Høgni Hoydal . From 2004 to January 2008 he sat again for his party in parliament. Together with party colleague Annita á Fríðriksmørk , he was the initiator of the Faroe Islands ' anti-discrimination law , which since 2006 has also explicitly protected homosexuals .

Finnur Helmsdal died of cancer on December 5, 2008 in Tórshavn.
