Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral ( Bulgarian Храм-паметник "Свети Александър Невски" , Chram-pametnik "Sweti Aleksandar Newski") is the patriarchal cathedral of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and its administrative seat.

The cathedral is one of the landmarks of the Bulgarian capital Sofia . It was designed by the Russian architect Alexander Pomeranzew , who also planned the GUM department store in Moscow . The foundation stone was laid in 1882; the actual construction took place mostly between 1904 and 1912. The cathedral in neo-Byzantine style is located on Alexander Nevsky Square in the center of the city and is dedicated to the Russian national saint Alexander Nevsky .

Iconostasis and interior

It was built in memory of Tsar Alexander II and the approximately 20,000 Russian soldiers who died during the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877-78 .

From 1916 to 1920 the cathedral was called Saint Cyril and Methodius Cathedral , but was then called again with the old name.

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral with the crypt is listed as No. 59 in the list of 100 national tourist sites in Bulgaria.

Interior

The cathedral has five naves and the interior is adorned with gold , mosaics , marble and carvings . The windows are decorated with stained glass , walls and domes with frescoes . Furthermore, even Alabaster see -Kunstwerke. Under the cathedral there is a crypt , in which there is an icon museum with Bulgarian saints from the period between the 9th and the 18th century. The Poganowo icon is also located here .

The Russian and Bulgarian painters Stefan Iwanow , Jan Václav Mrkvička , WM Wasnezow, GG Mjassojedow, Anton Mitov and others were involved in the magnificent decoration of the cathedral .
