Wassili Andrejewitsch Tropinin ( Russian Василий Андреевич Тропинин , scientific transliteration Vasilij Andreevič Tropinin ; * March 19 ^July / March 30,  1776 ^{reg. In} the Novgorod governorate ; † May 3. ^July / May 15,  1857 ) was ^greg. In Moscow a Russian painter who became known for portraiture .

Life

Tropinin grew up as the son of a serf . Around 1798 he was sent to Saint Petersburg to do an apprenticeship with a pastry chef. After a while, however, he continued to develop his talent for drawing at the Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts under the direction of SS Shchukin. In 1804, however, he was ordered back by his landlord; he was ordered to go to Ukraine . Until 1821 he lived mainly in Ukraine. Many natural paintings were created during this time. He later moved to Moscow.

In 1823, at the age of 47, he received his freedom from serfdom. In the same year he presented his painting The Lace Maker (Кружевница) and the portrait of the artist JO Skotnikow (Портрет художника Е.О.Скотникова) to the Council of the Petersburg Art Academy and was appointed as the appointed artist. In 1824 he was named an academic for his portrait of KA Leberecht (Портрет К. А. Леберехта).

From 1833 he taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture . Ten years later he was elected an honorary member of the Moscow Artists Society. He died in Moscow at the age of 81.

Wassili Tropinin made a name for himself primarily as a portrait painter. All in all, he created more than 3000 paintings , among others by many personalities of contemporary history of his time, primarily by artists of various genres. In addition, the main focus of his work was the representation of the life of the common people.
