Scherdewka ( Russian Жердевка ) is a city in Tambov Oblast ( Russia ) with 15,209 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the southern part of the Oka-Don plain about 130 km south of the oblast capital Tambov on the right bank of the Sawala , a right tributary of the Chopjor flowing into the Don .
Scherdewka is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
history
A village of Scherdewka about eight kilometers from today's city was founded in 1745, named after the first settler FT Scherdew.
1869 at the under construction railway line to Tsaritsyn (today was Volgograd ), the station Burnak opened, near which resulted in the settlement Tschibisowka emerged. In 1905 the station was renamed Scherdewka after the old village .
From the 1920s onwards, a number of companies in the food industry emerged around Tschibisowka and the Scherdewka train station, including a larger sugar factory in 1937. In 1924 Tschibisowka became the administrative center for the surrounding towns.
On July 15, 1954, Chibisowka and the settlements at the train station and the sugar factory were merged and received city rights under the name Scherdewka .

The city has a local museum.
Economy and Infrastructure
Scherdewka is the center of the food industry. There are also companies in the construction industry.
The city lies on the railway line ( Moscow -) Grjasi –Volgograd, which was opened continuously in 1871 (route km 603 from Moscow). The M6 Moscow – Volgograd – Astrakhan road also passes nearby.
