Uwarowo ( Russian Уварово ) is a city in Tambov Oblast ( Russia ) with 26,830 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the southeast of the Oka-Don plain about 120 km southeast of the oblast capital Tambov on the right bank of the Worona , a right tributary of the Chopjor, which flows into the Don .

Uvarowo is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

history

Uvarowo was founded by Cossacks in 1699 . The name is derived from the family name Uwarow .

In 1770 the Borisoglebsk - Kirsanow postal route was passed through Uvarowo, so that it developed into a regional trading center in the course of the 19th century.

In 1960 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement and in 1966 the town charter .

Culture and sights

In the nearby village of Ivanovka there is a museum for the composer Sergei Rachmaninov , who lived and worked there at the beginning of the 20th century on the estate of his cousin and wife.

In the village of Staraya Olschanka are the remains of the estate of the noble Wojeikow family, where the painter Vasily Polenow and his sister, the painter and illustrator Jelena Polenowa often stayed. The Church of the Resurrection ( Воскресенская церковь / Woskressenskaja zerkow) belonging to the estate from 1843 to 1860 has been preserved.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Uvarowo there is an important fertilizer plant as well as companies in the food and building materials industries.

The city lies on the railway line Tambow- Balashov - Kamyshin (Station Name Oblowka ).
