Rasskasowo ( Russian Рассказово ) is a city in Tambov Oblast ( Russia ) with 45,484 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the central part of the Oka-Don plain about 40 km east of the Oblast capital Tambow on the river Lesnoi Tambow , a right tributary of the Zna in the river system of the Volga .

Rasskasowo is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

The Rasskasowo railway station is located ten kilometers northwest of the Moscow - Tambov - Saratov railway line, opened in 1871 (route km 501). The Platonowo station is closer to the city center, at the settlement of the same name (route km 515). Rasskazovo by the highway leads 1R208 Tambow- Kirsanof (more than 1R209 according Pensa ).

history

The place was created in 1698 when the farmer Stepan Rasskasow from Morschansk settled here, after whom the place was named.

From the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century, the village was known for its handicrafts, such as knitwear and tannery, candles and soap. In 1753 a weaving mill was founded, and a little later a dyeing factory.

In 1926 city rights were granted.

Culture and sights

In Rasskasowo, the Church of the Apostles John ( церковь Иоанна Богослова / zerkow Ioanna Bogoslowa) from 1895 and parts of the estate of the Poltoratski family, close friends of Alexander Pushkin from the beginning of the 19th century, as well as the estate of the Asseev family from 1902 and park.

Remains of the former “salt road” to Astrakhan have been preserved in the more than 100 hectare forest area of Besduschny kust near the city .
