Kirsanow ( Russian Кирсанов ) is a city in Tambov Oblast ( Russia ) with 17,224 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The city is located about 95 km east of the oblast capital Tambov on the Pursowka river not far from its confluence with the Worona in the river system of the Don .

Kirsanow is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

history

Coat of arms (1781)

The place was founded in the first half of the 17th century as the village of Kirsanowo , named after the first settler Kirsan Subakin, where Kirsan is the popular form of the name Chrysanth , Church Slavic Chrisanf .

In 1702 the settlement was mentioned in a document as belonging to the Krassinski ironworks .

In 1779 the place received city rights as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) of the Tambov governorate under the name Kirsanow . In the 19th century Kirsanow was an important town for merchants and craftsmen, especially after the railway line opened in 1875.

The Kirsanov district was one of the centers of the Tambov peasant uprising from 1920 to 1922 .

Culture and sights

In Kirsanow, the trading series from 1838 to 1841 and the Cosmas and Damian Church ( Козьмодемьянская церковь / Kosmodemjanskaja zerkow) from 1839 have been preserved, along with a number of other administrative and public buildings from the 19th century ( Semstvo administration and hospital, train station , Merchants' club).

The city has had a local museum since 1924.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Kirsanow there is a factory for textile machines and factories in the textile and food industry (sugar, dry milk, canned fruit and vegetables).

The city lies on the railway line Moscow –Tambov– Saratow, which was opened continuously in 1875 (route km 571). After Kirsanof the highway leads 1R208 Tambov that from here as 1R209 further Penza runs.

Kirsanow is the main breeding region of the Tambow red cattle .

  • Alexander Antonov (1888–1922), Social Revolutionary and later one of the leaders of the Tambov peasant uprising, spent youth and time before the uprising in Kirsanov
  • Evgeni Baratynski (1800–1844), writer and poet, born on the Wjaschlo estate in the Kirsanow district
  • Juri Perlin (1917–1990), Russian-Moldovan theoretical physicist, solid-state physicist and university professor; born in Kirsanov
