Kotowsk ( Russian Котовск ) is a city in Tambov Oblast ( Russia ) with 31,850 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the central part of the Oka-Don plain about 15 km south of Oblasthauptstadt Tambov on the right bank of the Zna , a left tributary of Moksha in the river system of the Volga .
Kotovsk is administratively directly subordinate to the oblast .
history
The place arose in connection with the establishment of a state explosives plant between 1914 and 1916. Initially, it was a part of Tambov as a settlement Porochowoi Sawod (Russian literally for powder plant ).
On March 18, 1919, the name was changed to Krasny Bojewik ("Red Fighter"). Later it was named Oktyabrsky as one of the three city districts .
On April 16, 1940, the place became independent and received city rights under its current name, after Grigori Kotowski (1881-1925), a commander of the Red Army who was involved in the suppression of the peasant uprising of Tambov in 1921 .

Culture and sights
Near the city, on the banks of the Zna between Kotovsk and Tambov, there are remains of the Treguljajew John the Baptist monastery ( Трегуляев-Предтеченский монастырь / Treguljajew-Predtetschensky monastyr) from the second half of the 17th century.
Economy and Infrastructure
Kotovsk is an industrial satellite town of Tambov with factories for plastics, varnishes and paints, artificial leather as well as factories in the building materials and food industries. The largest employers are the state powder factory Tambowski Porochowoi Zavod and the factory ALMAS .
The city is the end point of a 17-kilometer-long railway line opened in 1932 , which branches off the Moscow - Saratov line in Tambov ( Tambov-I station ) . The Tambov-II station is also located on the northern edge of Kotowsk . The Tambow-II station has been shut down as a passenger station for several years and is only used for freight traffic. Passenger traffic between Kotovsk and Tambov is now only handled by bus or marshrutka ("gazelle").
