Transfiguration Cathedral (Tambov)
The Transfiguration Cathedral ( Russian Спасо-Преображенский собор ) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city of Tambov in Russia . The cathedral was built from 1694 to 1783 in the center of the city.
history
Construction of the Transfiguration Cathedral began in 1694. The construction of a new cathedral was initiated by the then Bishop Pitirim of Tambov. The sacred building should be built instead of a small wooden Transfiguration Church.
However, Bishop Pitirim died before construction was completed. He was buried in a crypt near the cathedral. The largest church building in Tambov could not be completed until 1783 with the help of Matvej Borodin, a city merchant .
In 1812 a bell tower was built a hundred meters from the Transfiguration Cathedral . At the beginning of the 20th century , Tsar Nicholas II , Grand Duchess Yelisavyeta Fyodorovna Romanova and John of Kronstadt visited the cathedral.
As a result of a decision by the local authorities, like many churches at the time, it was closed in 1930. A regional museum was housed in the building.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the cathedral was returned to the Diocese of Tambov in August 1992.
architecture
The church combines the predominant Russian cathedral model - cubic basic form, dome-like central tower with four smaller companions in the corners - with decorative forms of the European Rococo , which also include the pastel green color. Deviating from the scheme, an additional yoke of the same height and a lower nave with the main portal are added to the square .
