Ferdinand Bo (e) l (* 1616 in Dordrecht ; † August 24, 1680 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch painter of biblical scenes and self-portraits .

Life

Bol was the son of a barber and first learned from Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp , Albert Cuyp's father , and further with Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht. Then he moved to Amsterdam and became a pupil of Rembrandt van Rijn , both worked in the studio of Hendrick van Uylenburgh . Bol had good relations with the Admiralty through his first wife and received several commissions from them. Bol became very wealthy when he married a wealthy widow after his first wife died. He lived on Keizersgracht 672, the house is now the Van Loon Museum . Since then, Bol had hardly made any paintings. He administered the municipal leper house .

The 17 or so etchings by Bol are in Rembrandt's style. Some were so similar that they were long ascribed to Rembrandt. His works can be found in the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum ( Rotterdam ), the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam , the Alte Pinakothek ( Munich ), the Art Gallery in Tambow , the National Gallery ( London ), the Louvre ( Paris ), and the Hermitage ( Saint Petersburg ) and in the Old Masters Picture Gallery ( Dresden ).

Bol's paintings are rarely found on the art market because they are often in private collections or in public buildings.
