Abraham Bloemaert (born December 25, 1564 in Gorinchem , Holland , † January 27, 1651 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch painter.

Life

Bloemaert, son of the sculptor and architect Cornelis Bloemaert , learned in Utrecht and Paris , was accepted as a citizen in Amsterdam in 1597 and worked in Utrecht from 1611, where he seems to have remained settled until his death.

Bloemaert exerted a great influence on Dutch painting. To a certain extent, he mediated between her and the Flemish school and cultivated history, the portrait , the genre and the landscape.

The numerous engravings and woodcuts made after him in chiaroscuro give a rich picture of his artistic endeavors. His coloristic treatment is reminiscent of the mannerists of the 16th century , his drawing is somewhat dull, his color bright.

Works by him are mainly in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco , but also in the galleries of Berlin and the Louvre in Paris.

One of his students was Gerrit van Honthorst .

Abraham Bloemaert had been married to Judith van Schonenburgh since May 2, 1592, and the marriage ended without children. On October 12, 1600 Bloemaert married Gerarda de Roij, a brewer's daughter. The marriage produced many children. The sons Hendrick (1601–1672), Frederick (1614 / 1617–1690), Cornelis (1603–1692) and Adriaan (after 1609–1666) were also painters.

Bloemaert's grave is in St. Catherine's Church in Utrecht .
