Jan Saenredam

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jan Saenredam (* 1565 in Zaandam ; † 1607 in Assendelft ) was a Dutch engraver and cartographer.

Career

Saenredam grew up as an orphan with his uncle Pieter de Jongh . Although he was brought up to take up a craft or farming profession, he decided to draw and had success as a map maker. With the help of a lawyer, he came relatively late in 1589 to the circle around Hendrick Goltzius , one of whose most important students he was. Saenredam then worked closely with Goltzius and Jacques de Gheyn II for a short time , but returned to Assendelft around 1595 , where he married. His son, Pieter Jansz Saenredam (1597–1665), who emerged from this marriage , later became a well-known painter.

Works

The allegory of the cave (copperplate engraving)

He created many engravings on the Old and New Testament and on classical mythology as well as various allegorical depictions , such as B. 1604 a copper engraving depicting Plato 's allegory of the cave , which was made by Cornelis Corneliszoon van Haarlem (1562–1638) after an oil painting that is now lost . It is one of the very few representations of this subject in the visual arts.
