Gorochowez ( Russian Гороховец ) is a city in the Vladimir Oblast ( Russia ) with 14,016 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 150 km east of the Oblast capital Vladimir on the right, high bank of the Klyazma , a left tributary of the Oka, which flows into the Volga .
Gorokhovets is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
history
General
Gorokhovets was first mentioned in 1158 as a base in the east of the Principality of Vladimir-Suzdal and was in fact considered a city. In 1239 it was destroyed by the Mongols .
In the 14th century Gorokhovets was administered from Nizhny Novgorod until the principality was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1392 . Until 1619 it kept its military functions as a fortress.
The town had its heyday in the 17th century when it was known for its tanneries, weaving and blacksmithing. In 1778 he received the formal town charter as the administrative center of a district (Ujesds).
In the 19th century Gorokhovets was the local trading center of an agricultural area, mainly for grain and flax .

Culture and sights
Since the economic boom of the late 19th century and the industrialization of the Soviet period had relatively little impact on the city, the old cityscape is well preserved.
Among the monuments which was founded in 1643 include Nicholas Monastery ( Никольский монастырь / Nikolski monastyr) with the Trinity Nicholas Church ( Троице-Никольская церковь / Troize-Nikolskaya Zerkow) 1681-1686, the Church of the Resurrection ( Воскресенская церковь / Woskressenskaja Zerkow) from the last Quarter of the 17th century, the Cathedral of the Annunciation ( Благовещенский собор / Blagoweschenski sobor) from 1700 as well as the Monastery of the Representation of the Lord ( Сретенский монастырь / Sretenski monastyr) with the church of the same name from 1689. from the second half of the 17th century.
The city has a history and architecture museum as well as a nature museum .
Economy and Infrastructure
In Gorokhovets there is a plant for hoists , a shipyard and factories in the food industry.
Tourism plays an important role in the city, which is sometimes included in the Golden Ring .
The city's train station is twelve kilometers away in the village of Velikowo on the Moscow – Nizhny Novgorod railway line opened in 1862 (route km 363), on which the majority of the trains of the Trans-Siberian Railway run on its western part from Moscow.
The M7 Moscow – Nizhny Novgorod – Kazan – Ufa road (part of the European route 22 ) runs through Gorochovets .
