Neal Pionk (born July 29, 1995 in Hermantown , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League since June 2019 and plays there in the position of defender .

Career

Neal Pionk played in his youth for the Hermantown High ice hockey team in a regional high school league. During the 2012/13 season, the defender moved to the Sioux City Musketeers in the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior league in the United States. In Sioux City, he significantly increased his personal statistics for the 2014/15 season, leading the defenders of the league in scorer points (48) and was therefore named Defender of the Year and voted into the USHL First All-Star Team . Then Pionk enrolled at the University of Minnesota Duluth and ran from then on for their Bulldogs in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), a league in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). He also established himself as an attacking defender in Duluth and won the NCHC championship with the Bulldogs at the end of the 2016/17 season, while he was personally appointed to the NCHC Second All-Star Team .

Without previously being considered in an NHL Entry Draft , he signed an entry contract with the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League (NHL) in May 2017 . The Rangers initially used him on their farm team , the Hartford Wolf Pack , in the American Hockey League (AHL) before making his NHL debut in February 2018 and playing 28 games for New York by the end of the season. At the beginning of the 2018/19 season he established himself in the Rangers' squad, but was transferred to the Winnipeg Jets after the season together with a first-round right to vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . In return, Jacob Trouba moved to New York. At the Jets, Pionk signed a new two-year deal in July 2019 that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 3 million. In his first season in Winnipeg he increased his personal statistics significantly, with 45 points scorer he became the strongest defensive player on his team.

International

At the international level, Pionk made his debut for the USA national team at the 2018 World Cup , where he won the bronze medal with the team.
