Daniel O'Regan (born January 30, 1994 in Berlin , Germany ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League since July 2019 and also for their farm team , the Hartford Wolf Pack , plays in the American Hockey League on the position of the center . His father Tom O'Regan was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

O'Regan was born in the German capital Berlin , while his father Tom O'Regan played for BSC Preussen in the German Ice Hockey League . After his father's career ended in 1998, however, the family returned to Massachusetts in the United States . Daniel O'Regan then attended Saint Sebastian's School until the summer of 2012 and played for the U18 team Cape Cod Whalers . In addition, he played a few games for the US National Team Development Program of the US Ice Hockey Association USA Hockey in the United States Hockey League during the 2011/12 season . Following the season, the striker was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2012 in the fifth round in 138th place by the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League and then enrolled at Boston University . There he played for the next four years - in addition to his studies - in parallel for the ice hockey program of the university in Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .

In his rookie year , O'Regan was the team's highest point player and was appointed to the Hockey East's all-rookie team. His second year was an exception with only 22 points, as he came back even stronger in the following two years with a total of 94 points. At the end of the 2014/15 season, he found himself in the Second All-Star Team. The bigger success, however, was winning the division championship. Overall, the center forward collected as many points in 154 missions over the course of four years. In April 2016, the American was finally signed by the San Jose Sharks, who entered him in the American Hockey League with their farm team , the San Jose Barracuda , at the beginning of the 2016/17 game year . O'Regan collected eleven scorer points there in the first eleven missions, which meant that he was appointed to the NHL squad San Joses for the first time in late November. Nevertheless, he spent most of the season with the Barracuda and was appointed to the AHL All-Rookie Team at the end of the season . He also received the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award for best newcomer to the league.

After two years in the organization of the Sharks, O'Regan was handed over to the Buffalo Sabers in February 2018 for the trade deadline including a conditional first-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2019 and a conditional four-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2020 . In return, Evander Kane moved to San Jose. He was active in Buffalo for almost a year and a half before joining the New York Rangers as a free agent in July 2019 .

International

O'Regan decided to play for his father's home country and represented the United States in the junior division at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 , the U18 World Junior Championship in 2012 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2014 . While he finished the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and the U20 Junior World Championship with the team in fifth place, he was able to win the title in this age group at the U18 Junior World Championship in the Czech Republic . In addition, he contributed four scorer points in six tournament appearances. He scored his only goal in the clear 7-0 final victory over the Swedish selection.
