Alexander Dmitriyevich Barabanov ( Russian Александр Дмитриевич Барабанов ; English transcription: Alexander Dmitriyevich Barabanov ; born June 17, 1994 in Saint Petersburg ) is a Russian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League since April 2020 ( N . Previously, the right winger played for SKA Saint Petersburg in the Continental Hockey League (KHL) from 2013 to 2020 and won the Gagarin Cup twice with it . At the 2018 Winter Olympics , Barabanov won the gold medal with the Russian national team under a neutral flag .

Career

Alexander Barabanov played in his youth for SKA-1946 , the youth team of SKA Saint Petersburg , in the Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja Liga (MHL). In the country's top junior division, he was the top scorer in the 2012/13 season (39) and also made his first professional appearance for SKA-Neva Saint Petersburg , the SKA's farm team , in the second-rate Wysschaja Hockey League . In the 2013/14 season, the attacker made his debut in the Continental Hockey League (KHL), where he gradually received more playing time in the following years. As a result, he won the KHL playoffs for the Gagarin Cup with the team from his hometown in 2015 and 2017 .

After seven years with the SKA, Barabanow signed a one-year contract for the 2020/21 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL) in April 2020 .

International

Barabanov made his international debut at the 2012 U18 World Cup , before winning the bronze medal with the Russian U20 national team at the 2014 U20 World Cup . With the senior national team , he won more bronze medals at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships , before representing the Sbornaja under a neutral flag at the 2018 Winter Games and becoming Olympic champion there with the team.
