The games were played in the PSG aréna (6,975 places) in Zlín and in the Zimní stadion Přerov (3,000 places) in Přerov. A total of 17,480 spectators attended the 22 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 794 per game.
Eight national teams took part, playing in two groups of four teams each. The two groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams at the 2011 World Cup according to the following key:

USA (1) | Canada (2) |
Czech Republic (4) | Finland (3) |
Sweden (5) | Germany (6) |
Russia (9) | Switzerland (7) |
Canada secured the world championship title, winning the final with a 3-0 win over the defending champion and arch-rival USA. It was the second title win for the Canadians and the first since the 2010 World Cup . Sweden won the bronze medal with a 4-1 victory over the surprisingly impressive team from Germany. Finland and the host Czech Republic secured places 5 and 6. In the relegation round, Switzerland had to go to Division I in the best-of-three series against newly promoted Russia despite an opening victory, as they narrowly lost the two following games.
In the individual awards, the American Alex Carpenter was named the best striker, the Canadian Erin Ambrose the best defender and Franziska Albl from Germany the best goalkeeper. The top scorer and top scorer at the same time was the American Haley Skarupa , who scored eleven points - all of them goals. When it came to assists, her teammate Maryanne Menefee led with seven.

The Division I tournament was held from December 29, 2011 to January 4, 2012 in Tromsø , Norway . The games took place in Ishall Grønnåsen, which can hold 500 people . A total of 1,483 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 98 per game.
Hungary, which only found its way into Division I through qualification, confidently secured promotion to the top division with five wins. Only against the third-placed Japanese, who missed the direct re-promotion, the Hungarians needed the penalty shootout . The same was true for Austria, who also needed the penalty shootout to win against Japan, but secured second place with only one narrow defeat against Hungary. The host Norwegians took fourth place. Qualifying Great Britain and Slovakia, which was second behind Russia, who had been promoted last year, had to make do with places 5 and 6 and expect a possible relegation to qualification or Division II.

The qualifying tournament for Division I was held from November 29th to December 4th 2011 in Asiago , Italy . The games took place in the Pala Hodegart with a capacity of 2,500 . A total of 2,089 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 139 per game.
In addition to the four participants already seeded, the teams from France and Kazakhstan had also registered for the World Cup in Division I. This was also the case last year. In addition, Hungary, the People's Republic of China, Great Britain and Italy had also formally agreed. The admission of the four teams was approved at the biannual IIHF congress in September 2011 in Turkey.
The four new participants made a qualification for Division I necessary. The four newcomers and the last two teams from last year - France and Kazakhstan - took part. The two best teams in the qualification ultimately took the two free places in Division I.
In the qualification, Hungary and Great Britain prevailed sovereignly, while last year's Division I participants France and Kazakhstan did not get beyond ranks 5 and 6.
