U18 women Sweden 2016

In February 2007 the IIHF held three invitation tournaments for U18 women’s national teams from Europe and Asia. These should test the interest in a U18 women’s World Cup. The IIHF Congress in May 2007 then decided to hold a U18 women’s world championship from 2008. The invitation tournaments served as qualification.

The first world championship took place in Calgary , Canada . In the final, the USA beat Canada 5-2. With the exception of 2018, the USA have played against Canada in every final, in 2018 Sweden reached the final and lost to the USA 3: 9.

With a few exceptions, the tournament of the top division takes place at the turn of the year or at the beginning of January , which is close to the world championship of male U20 juniors .

In 2009 the Division I tournament was introduced, the winner of which qualifies for the tournament of the top division of the following year. The field of participants expanded continuously, so that in 2020 the divisions IA, IB, IIA and IIB will be played with promotion and relegation.
