The U18 world championship of the top division took place from December 28, 2011 to January 5, 2013 in the Finnish city of Heinola and its suburb Vierumäki . The games were played in the Versowood Areena (2,975 seats) and in the ice rink of the Sport Institute of Finland. The premises of the Sport Institute in Virumäki were also used for the accommodation and training of the participating teams. A total of 6,164 spectators attended the 21 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 294 per game.
Eight national teams took part, playing in two groups of four teams each. The two groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams at the 2012 World Cup according to the following key:
Group A | Group B |
Canada (1) | USA (2) |
Germany (4) | Sweden (3) |
Finland (5) | Czech Republic (6) |
Hungary (9) | Russia (7) |
The world championship was secured by defending champions Canada, who won the final with a narrow 2-1 win in extra time against arch rivals USA. It was the third overall title win for the Canadians, who caught up with the previous record winner from the United States. Sweden won the bronze medal for the fourth time with a clear 4-0 victory over the Czech Republic. Finland and the surprisingly triumphant climber from Hungary secured positions 5 and 6. In the relegation round, last year's fourth Germany in the best-of-three series against Russia had to go to Division I after two defeats.
In the individual awards, the American Kate Schipper was named the most valuable player and best striker. With eleven scorer points and eight assists, she was also the top scorer and the best assists in the tournament. The Canadian Halli Krzyzaniak was named best defender and Minatsu Murase from Sweden named best goalkeeper. With six goals, the Russian Anna Schochina scored the most tournament goals .
mode
After the group games - each team played three of them - the first two of the group qualified directly for the semi-finals. The runners-up and thirds in the group each played a qualifying game for participation in the semi-finals. The fourth of the group games contested a best-of-three series for seventh place and relegation to Division I.

The Division I tournament was held from January 2 to 8, 2013 in Romanshorn , Switzerland . The games took place in the ice sports center Oberthurgau , which can hold 1,500 spectators . A total of 2,937 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 195 per game.
The tournament victory and thus promotion to the top division was achieved by the superior Japanese team, which was able to win all of its five tournament games. Second place went to the host Swiss, who had been relegated from the top division a year earlier. They missed the promotion due to a defeat against Norway on matchday two and a defeat after a penalty shootout against Japan. The Austrian U18 selection, which had reached second place in the tournament in 2012, this time lost all of its tournament games and was relegated to qualification.
