James F. Burke

James Francis Burke (born October 21, 1867 in Petroleum Center , Venango County , Pennsylvania , †  August 8, 1932 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1905 and 1915 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Burke attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and his admission to the bar in 1892, he began to work in this profession in Pittsburgh . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1892 he was secretary of the Republican National Committee . He then became president of the American Republican College League . US President Benjamin Harrison charged him with the revision of the shipping laws. Between 1892 and 1928, with one exception - in 1912 - he was involved in all Republican National Conventions either as a delegate or as a member of the organizing committee.

In the 1904 congressional election , Burke was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 31st  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Henry Kirke Porter on March 4, 1905 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1915 .

In 1905 Burke took part as a delegate at a peace conference in Brussels . Between 1909 and 1911 he was chairman of the education committee. He also sat on the military committee and on the currency and banking committee for a time. In 1914 he decided not to run again for Congress.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Burke practiced law again. During the First World War , as Director of War Savings , he headed the federal agency for war savings . From December 1927 until his death, he served as legal advisor to the Republican National Committee.

In his private life he was an avid golfer . He had two children with his wife Josephine. James Burke died on August 8, 1932 in the federal capital Washington and was buried in Pittsburgh.
