Hunter Shinkaruk (born October 13, 1994 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Kunlun Red Star from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) since December 2019 and plays there in the position of the left winger .
Career
Shinkaruk played in his youth for the various junior teams of the Calgary Royals and was in the Bantam Draft 2009 of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the first round in 14th position by the Medicine Hat Tigers . For the 2010/11 season he moved to the Canadian Major Junior League and scored 42 points in 63 games . In the play-offs he reached the WHL Eastern Conference final with the Tigers and was subject to the Kootenay Ice there . In the following season he was able to increase his points yield from the previous year significantly and achieve 91 points in 66 games; including 49 goals. In the championship finals, Medicine Hat was eliminated in the second round against the Moose Jaw Warriors .
Prior to the start of the 2012/13 WHL season , Hunter Shinkaruk was named team captain of the Medicine Hat Tigers. The offensive player scored 86 points this season before he and his team were eliminated in the second playoff round, as in the previous season. Following the season, Shinkaruk was elected to the WHL East Second All-Star team.
Shinkaruk was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2013 in the first round at a total of 24th position by the Vancouver Canucks . After the 2013/14 season he moved to the Canucks organization and from then on played for the Utica Comets in the American Hockey League (AHL). In November 2015 he made his NHL debut in Vancouver before the Canucks gave him in February 2016 in exchange for Markus Granlund to the Calgary Flames . As a result, Shinkaruk spent a little over two seasons in Calgary before being transferred to the Canadiens de Montréal in August 2018 in exchange for Kerby Rychel . During the 2018/19 season , the striker only played in the AHL with the Rocket de Laval farm team . After his contract expired in summer 2019, he signed a contract as a free agent with the reigning Calder Cup winner Charlotte Checkers from the AHL in the middle of the same year . There he only played until the end of 2019, before he switched to Kunlun Red Star from the Continental Hockey League (KHL).
International
At the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 he won the bronze medal with the Canada Pacific team; in addition, he was elected to the all-star team of the tournament. His first appearance for the Canadian national team had Shinkaruk at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 , where he won the gold medal with the team. A little later, Shinkaruk was also part of Team Canada at the U18 World Junior Championship in 2012 . In the competition held in the Czech Republic , the left-handed shooter scored eight points in six games and won the bronze medal with his team after winning the game for third place against the Finnish selection . Shinkaruk scored two goals in this game, including the decider in the third minute of extra time .
