Obereiderseen

Schirnauer See, the eastern Obereidersee.

The three Obereider lakes Schirnauer See , Borgstedter See and Audorfer See are located northeast of the cities of Rendsburg and Büdelsdorf and are traversed by the Eider . They were involved in the construction of the Schleswig-Holstein Canal and later the Kiel Canal . The Kiel Canal currently flows through the Schirnauer See and Audorfer See on their southeastern edge. The Borgstedter See, which was originally also flowed through by the canal, turned out to be too narrow for canal shipping at its western exit, which is why the whole lake is also referred to as Borgstedter Enge in some sources . When the canal was expanded from 1907 to 1914, the Schirnauer See and Audorfer See were directly connected with a piercing bypassing the Borgstedter See, creating the Rader Island .
