Gemel Smith (born April 16, 1994 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League since July 2019 and for their farm team , the Syracuse Crunch , in the American Hockey League plays on the position of the center . His brother Givani Smith is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Smith first played from the beginning of the 2010/11 season to January 2014 for the Owen Sound Attack in the Ontario Hockey League . During this time he was selected in the fourth round of the NHL Entry Draft 2012 in 104th position by the Dallas Stars from the National Hockey League and had also represented the Attack in the 2011 Memorial Cup . In January 2014, the striker moved within the OHL to the London Knights , with whom he also took part in the Memorial Cup.

After the season ended, Smith was signed by the Dallas Stars in May 2014. The attacker was used at the beginning of the 2014/15 season for the following two game years in the farm team Texas Stars in the American Hockey League . At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , he finally celebrated his NHL debut after he was appointed to the NHL from the AHL squad for the first time. From the 2017/18 season he was regularly used for Dallas.

After more than four years in the Stars' organization, Smith was signed by the Boston Bruins in December 2018 when he was waivered to return to the AHL. With the exception of three NHL games for Boston, Smith spent the remainder of the season with the Providence Bruins in the AHL. In July 2019, he finally moved to the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent .

International

Smith represented his home country at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 and the U18 World Junior Championship in 2012 in the Czech Republic . The striker won the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. At the U18 Junior World Championship he was able to contribute five scorer points to winning the bronze medal in seven games.
