Marko Daňo (born November 30, 1994 in Eisenstadt , Austria ) is a Slovak ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League since August 2019 and for their farm team, the Cleveland Monsters , in the American Hockey League plays in the position of the right winger . His father Jozef was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Marko Daňo was born in Eisenstadt, but grew up in Trenčín, Slovakia . He played there until 2012 with HC Dukla Trenčín and then moved to HC Slovan Bratislava , for which he was active in the Continental Hockey League . In the 2013 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 27th position.

On March 14, 2014, during the 2013/14 season , Daňo signed an NHL entry contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets. A few days later, the management of the Blue Jackets sent him to their AHL farm team, the Springfield Falcons , where he played 10 games by the end of the season. In the season 2014/15 he made his debut in the NHL and was used in roughly equal parts with the Falcons and the Blue Jackets.

In June 2015 he was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks along with Corey Tropp , Artyom Anissimow , Jeremy Morin and a four-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2016 . In return, the Blue Jackets went to Brandon Saad , Alex Broadhurst and Michael Paliotta . The Blackhawks then gave him to their AHL farm team, the Rockford IceHogs , during the pre-season .

In February 2016, Daňo, including a first-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and a success-based third-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft (if Chicago wins the Stanley Cup 2016; did not happen), was given to the Winnipeg Jets . In return, Andrew Ladd , Jay Harrison and Matt Fraser switched to the Blackhawks. In the Jets, the Slovak finally succeeded in asserting himself in the NHL and was always part of the squad in the following two seasons, although he sat in the stands for a large part of the seasons. At the beginning of the 2018/19 season , the management finally tried to order him to the AHL via the waiver , but failed because the Colorado Avalanche selected him from there and took over his contract. When the Avalanche tried again a month later, the Slovak returned to Winnipeg via the waiver. There he ended the season and then moved in August 2019 as a free agent to the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he had started his NHL career.

International

Daňo took part in numerous junior tournaments for his home country. He played at the U18 Junior World Championships 2011 and 2012 of Division IA , the U20 Junior World Championships in 2012 , 2013 and 2014 and the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 . The striker shone above all at the U18 Junior World Championship of Division IA in 2012, when he was promoted again with the team. As the top scorer, top scorer and best striker of the tournament, he played a key role in this.

In the senior division, Daňo played at the World Championships in Finland and Sweden in 2013 , in the Czech Republic in 2015 , in Russia in 2016 and in 2019 in his Slovak homeland.
