The Elegest ( Russian Элегест, Элегёст ( Elegjost )) is a 177 km long, southern and orographically left tributary of the Yenisei in the South Siberian Republic of Tuva in Russia .

course

The Elegest rises about 20 km north of the border between Russia and Mongolia . Its source is in the Eastern Tannu-ola Mountains around 44 km (as the crow flies ) west-southwest of the Ak-Tal settlement on an unnamed and 2704  m high mountain at around 2300  m altitude.

The Elegest flows mainly north-east through a sparsely populated area. Initially it runs east-northeast to the settlement Ak-Tal , where the river makes an approximately U-shaped arc around the elevation Ak-Tal ( 1283  m ). It then flows eastwards to Chowu-Aksy and then northeastwards to Elegest , passing through Kotschetowo a little north with several branches of the river .

From then flows Elegest north to Ust-Elegest to where the highway A162 to pass under and about 450 meters below it at Jenissei- flow kilometers  3454 on 595  m height in the Jenissei to open .

Ice drift and fauna

The Elegest is usually covered in ice from October to May . It gets its water mainly from melting snow and summer rainfall . Perch , gudgeon , pike , burbot , roach and wolffish live in the river .

Catchment area and tributaries

The catchment area of the Elegest is 4810 km². Its tributaries include with orographic allocation (l = left-hand side, r = right-hand side) as well as - if known - the length of the water, its mouth with Elegest river kilometers and the size of the catchment area (viewed downstream) :
