The Uws Nuur ( Mongolian Увс Нуур ; Tuvinian Успа-Холь , Uspa-Chol ; Russian Убсу-Нур , Ubsu-Nur ) is the largest lake in Mongolia with an area of about 3350 km² ; Small parts of the salt lake belong to the Autonomous Republic of Tuva ( Russia ).
In 2003 the Uws-Nuur Basin Biosphere Reserve was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List .

Surname
The name Uvs Lake is derived from subsen , a Mongolian word for the bitter dregs of the manufacture of Kumys created and nuur , the Mongolian word for lake . It alludes to the bitter, undrinkable water of the lake.
Geographical location
The Uws Nuur is part of the Great Lakes Basin in northwestern Mongolia. It lies at an altitude of 753 m . The most important tributary of the lake is the Tes (Tesiin Gol) from the northeast. Small parts of the shore region and a small area of the northeastern part of the lake belong to the autonomous republic of Tuva (Russia). The largest city near the lake is Ulaangom in the southwest.
Nature and climate
The Uws-Nuur Basin includes several different ecosystems , such as B. the snow fields in the Turgen Mountains , the lake and steppe areas, the desert of Altan Els . It represents the border between Siberia and Central Asia. Temperatures fluctuate between −58 ° C in winter and 47 ° C in summer.

Despite the harsh climatic conditions, 173 bird species and 41 mammal species are native to the Uws-Nuur Basin. The lake is the habitat for many water birds . Rare animal species such as the Mongolian gerbil , the snow leopard , the wild sheep (Argali) and the Siberian ibex live in the surrounding desert and mountain regions .
