Ligia are a genus of landlice . They live in the splash zone of rocky marine beaches.
features
Ligia are larger than wood lice and reach lengths of up to a few centimeters. Some forms of the genus Ligia have a not very pronounced hump , which is related to a pressing behavior serving as enemy protection . The more nimble Ligia species with longer legs, on the other hand, have neither a clear hump nor the pressure behavior.
Habitat and Distribution
The habitat of the Ligia species is located in the splash zone of rocky marine beaches. With the exception of the polar regions, they occur almost worldwide on the sea coasts. However, there are also a few species that are found in inland humid forests, such as Ligia platycephala from South America.
Within Europe, Ligia italica is widespread in the Mediterranean region and on the Black Sea , Ligia oceanica occurs on the North and Baltic Seas and on the Atlantic coast. The endangered status of none of the species was checked by the IUCN , which is why they are not included in the Red List of Endangered Species .
Way of life
Ligia feed as saprophages on detritus , which occurs on beaches and in ports.
