Jozef Daňo (born December 28, 1968 in Nitra , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey player and current coach who has worked for HC Třinec in the Czech extra league , Dukla Trenčín in the Slovak extra league, and EK Zell am See and EV Zeltweg was active in the Austrian National League . Between 2009 and 2015 he was a member of Dukla Trenčín's coaching staff in various positions. One of the greatest successes of his career was his participation in theWinter Olympics 1994 and 1998 . His son Marko is also a hockey player.
Career
Jozef Daňo began his ice hockey career in his hometown with AC Nitra and made his debut for this in the 1990/91 season in the top division of Czechoslovakia, the 1st division . After the club's relegation to the second-class 1st SNHL , the team managed to return to the top division in 1992 with the championship of the 1st SNHL. After this success Daňo left his hometown club and moved to Dukla Trenčín .
In 1994 he won the championship of the Slovakian Extra League, founded in 1993, with Dukla Trenčín . From 1996 to 2001 he played for HC Třinec in the Czech extra league . He scored 104 goals and 148 assists in 327 Extraliga games and became Czech runner-up in 1998. At the beginning of the 2001/02 season he was with Ak Bars Kazan in the Russian Super League under contract, but ended the season at HKm Zvolen .
Between 2002 and 2006 he played in the Austrian National League for EK Zell am See . In the 2004/05 season he was the top scorer in the entire league with 48 goals and won the National League championship with the Zeller Eisbären .
He ended his career in 2009 after three seasons with EV Zeltweg for health reasons.
International
Jozef Daňo represented the Slovak national ice hockey team at the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer , where he scored two goals in a 3-1 win over Canada. He finished the tournament with three goals and three assists each and finished sixth with the national team. At the C world championship in 1994 , he made promotion to the B group with the Slovak selection, and a year later at the B world championship he was promoted to the A group.
He also took part in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano and in four A World Championships. In total, he completed 117 international matches for the national team, in which he scored 45 goals.
As a trainer
After his career ended in 2009, Jozef Daňo first became František Hossa's assistant coach at Dukla Trenčín. Between 2011 and 2013 he worked in the same position for head coach Róbert Kaláber . In the 2014/15 season he was sports manager at Dukla. Between 2016 and 2018 he was a member of the coaching staff of the U20 team at HC Oceláři Třinec . He has been an assistant coach at HC Frýdek-Místek since October 2018 .
