Alexander "Sasha" Chmelevski (born June 9, 1999 in Huntington Beach , California ) is an American ice hockey player of Ukrainian origin who has been under contract with the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League since April 2018 and for their farm team since October 2019 who have favourited San Jose Barracuda , who plays in the American Hockey League on the position of the center .

Career

Chmelevski, who has Ukrainian ancestry, spent his youth with numerous junior teams in the United States until the summer of 2015 . After the striker was selected in tenth overall position in the OHL Priority Selection by the Sarnia Sting from the Ontario Hockey League , he joined them for the 2015/16 season . By the beginning of 2016, he had played 29 games for his club and collected 17 points scorer . At the beginning of January 2016, Chmelevski was handed over to the Ottawa 67’s together with another player and eight draft voting rights, which in return received two players, including Travis Konecny . In the 67's, the attacker only made five more missions during the season, as he was posted to the U17 team of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program .

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , the American was fully in Ottawa's squad, although he again played a few matches for the National Team Development Program. Nevertheless, he came to 58 missions for Ottawa, in which he collected 43 points. In addition, he was awarded the Bobby Smith Trophy at the end of the season , which honored his athletic and academic achievements. In addition, he prevailed within the entire Canadian Hockey League in the election for CHL Scholastic Player of the Year against Brian King and Antoine Samuel , who had received equivalent awards in the Western Hockey League and Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In the 2017 NHL Entry Draft , however, it took until the sixth round before he was selected in 185th place by the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League . However, Chmelevski remained in the OHL and increased his point yield to 76 at the end of the year. As a result, he was equipped by the Sharks with a three-year NHL entry contract in April 2018 . In addition, he received an amateur trial contract until the end of the 2017/18 season , so that he could make his professional debut in the American Hockey League with the Sharks farm team , the San Jose Barracuda . There he collected six points in ten missions. At the beginning of the 2018/19 game year he was sent back to the OHL to the Ottawa 67's to finish his last year in the junior division. There he was honored for his academic achievements with the Roger Neilson Memorial Award , while he reached the playoff final for the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the 67's and was there, however, subject to the Guelph Storm .

For the 2019/20 season he moved permanently to the San Jose Barracuda in the AHL.

International

For his home country, Chemelevski played at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2015 and the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2016 . While he finished the World U-17 Hockey Challenge in sixth place and he scored four scorer points in five missions, he led the team at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament to win the silver medal. The striker was the top scorer of the tournament with ten points and his five goals, along with the Czech Filip Zadina, were also the most common in the tournament. He was then part of the U20 national team , which won the silver medal at the U20 World Cup in 2019 .
