Leon Gawanke (born May 31, 1999 in Berlin ) is a German ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League (NHL) since May 2019 and for their farm team , the Manitoba Moose , in the American Hockey League (AHL) plays on the position of defender .

Career

In his youth, Gawanke went through the junior division of the DEL club Eisbären Berlin , the Eisbären Juniors Berlin . There the defender played for the U16 team in the school league for the first time as a 13-year-old . From the 2013/14 season he was a regular player there, and in the following season, the now 15-year-old talent finally made his debut in the U19 team, which took part in the games of the German Junior League (DNL). In the U19 team, Gawanke became a regular player in the 2015/16 season. In the main round he played 41 of the 44 games and got 36 points scorer . Finally, he qualified with the Eisbären youth through the playoffs for the final tournament, where the team lost to the Adler Mannheim youth in the final . Supported by four points in the four finals, the defensive player received the award as most valuable player at the end of the tournament .

In the summer of 2016, Gawanke was selected in the CHL Import Draft of the Canadian Hockey League by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles from the Canadian junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ), whereupon he agreed to move to North America in July. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , the German went on the ice for the Screaming Eagles in the LHJMQ. In his rookie season , the offensive defender collected 32 points in 54 games. In June 2017, Gawanke was selected in the fifth round in the fifth round of the Winnipeg Jets from the National Hockey League in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . Gawanke remained in Cape Breton and confirmed his statistics from the previous year. After collecting 57 scorer points in the 2018/19 season, the third-most points among all defenders in the league, he received a three-year NHL entry contract from the Winnipeg Jets in May 2019 . In the Jets Gawanke was initially provided for the roster of the Manitoba Moose farm team from the American Hockey League .

International

For his home country, Gawanke has been playing for the German junior national teams since 2016. He contested the U18 Junior World Championship of Division IA in 2016 , in which he finished second with the German team and missed promotion to the top division. In five missions he prepared a goal. With the German U20 national team , the defender played the U20 Junior World Championship of Division IA in 2017 , 2018 and 2019 . In 2019, he was promoted to the top division. As part of these three tournaments, Gawanke played 14 games and scored ten times. He finished the 2018 tournament as the leader in the plus / minus rating.
