Alexis Lafrenière (born October 11, 2001 in Saint-Eustache , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has played for the Océanic de Rimouski in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ) since 2017 . The left winger is one of the most outstanding talents in world ice hockey and is considered a likely first overall draft pick in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2020 .
Career
Alexis Lafrenière was born in Saint-Eustache in the French-Canadian province of Québec. There he was in his youth, among others, for the lords of the Mille-Îles and for the Vikings de Saint-Eustache on before he 2017 Draft of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (LHJMQ) in the first position of the Rimouski Océanic selected has been. Nevertheless, the attacker was honored with the Trophée Michel Brière as MVP of the LHJMQ and the Trophée Paul Dumont as "Personality of the Year" for leadership qualities and fairness, while he was again considered in the LHJMQ First All-Star Team . He was also named CHL Player of the Year and prevailed against Joachim Blichfeld and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen .
At the beginning of the 2019/20 season, Lafrenière took over the position of team captain at the Océanic and achieved an average of over 2.0 points per game during the season, recording 112 points from 52 games. He also led the entire LHJMQ and was therefore honored with the trophy Jean Béliveau as top scorer. He also took part in the CHL Top Prospects Game and is unanimously a likely First Overall Draft Pick in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2020 .
International
On an international level, Lafrenière made his debut as part of the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2017 , where she won the silver medal with Team Canada Red . He played his first major tournament at the U18 World Cup in 2018 , where he missed the medal ranks with the Canadian selection and finished in fifth place. In summer 2018 he led the U18s of his home country to the gold medal at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup 2018 , where he (together with Wassili Podkolsin ) was the top scorer of the tournament. He was then appointed to the squad of the U20 national team at the age of 17 and took part in the U20 World Cup 2019 , where the team was eliminated again in the quarter-finals. The following year, he is also part of the Canadian squad at the U20 World Cup in 2020 , which won the gold medal in Ostrava, Czech Republic . Lafrenière was honored as the most valuable player and the best attacker and was also included in the tournament's all-star team.
