Jürgen Penker (born October 17, 1982 in Bregenz ) is a former Austrian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been the goalkeeper and assistant coach of the EHC Linz since 2015 . He is also the goalkeeping coach of the Austrian U20 team .
Career
Jürgen Penker began his career in the various youth teams of the EHC Lustenau and in the 1999/00 season he made his first appearances in the combat team, which at that time was still active in the top division. After a season with local rivals VEU Feldkirch , he moved to EC Red Bull Salzburg in 2004 , which was about to start its first Bundesliga season after winning the National League championship. There, however, Rob Tallas did not provide the hoped-for performance and was released early, so that Penker took over the position of first goalkeeper. The following season he was signed by the Vienna Capitals . Again the first goalkeeper, Jeff Maund , could not convince, but this time Penker could not take over his position, as Walter Bartholomäus could convince with very good performances.
In the summer of 2006 he moved to the EHC Linz , where an Austrian solution for the goal was sought with him and Patrick Machreich . After being a backup of Machreich in the first season, he took over Machreich's position in the 2007/08 season with outstanding performances. In the 2008/09 season, Penker was replaced by Alex Westlund , whom the team had already signed at a time when Penker's performances were not yet foreseeable. Penker then moved abroad for the first time in his career and signed a contract with the Danish first division club Totempo HvIK , where he performed well and was then committed during the season by the Swedish team Rögle BK . He spent the 2010/11 season at his ex-club Vienna Capitals. For the 2011/12 season he was signed by HK Nitra from the Slovak Extraliga , but went to Norway for Lørenskog IK in November 2011 . There he achieved the best catch quota in the GET leagues in 2012 . For family reasons, Penker moved back to Vienna Capitals in December 2013 .
In February 2015 he was signed by the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers before he officially ended his career in June 2015.
International
In the junior division, Jürgen Penker first played for Austria at the U18 B World Championships in 1999 and 2000 . With the U20 selection , he took part in the Division I World Championships in 2001 and 2002 .
On November 9, 2002, Penker made his debut in the Austrian national team in the 3-5 defeat in the friendly against Norway in Asker . He represented his home country at the World Championships in 2005 , 2009 and 2011 in the top division and at the World Championship in Division I in 2008 , when he was promoted to the top division. He was also part of the Austrian squad at the qualifying tournaments for the Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006 , when he was not used, and in Vancouver in 2010 , when he played in a 5-2 win against Japan .
Coaching career
After the end of his active career, Penker hired at EHC Linz as a goalkeeping coach. At the U20 World Cup 2018 was the goalkeeping coach of the Austrian juniors who play in Division I for the first time.
