Alex Westlund (born December 28, 1975 in Flemington Village , New Jersey ) is a former American ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach.

Career as a player

Westlund began his career in the team at Yale University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and was then able to move immediately to the East Coast Hockey League , where he played two seasons with the Dayton Bombers and could achieve good statistics. In the following years he moved between different teams in the smaller leagues before he got a commitment abroad for the first time in the 2002/03 season. The Russian first division team Amur Khabarovsk signed him for two seasons. In the first Westlund was able to show excellent performances, in the following, however, he could not continue.

In the 2004/05 season he returned to North America and played for the Charlotte Checkers for two seasons before the Slovenian team HDD Olimpija Ljubljana brought him back to Europe. Westlund showed outstanding performances and proved to be a strong support for his team, which played their first season in the Austrian ice hockey league and was able to surprise with a final participation.

In autumn 2007 he signed a two-year contract with the EHC Linz from the 2008/09 season . The Laibacher offered a transfer fee to keep the goalkeeper, but the Linz refused, so that Westlund now runs in Linz. There he succeeded in his second season for the time being the runner-up title. Two years later he became Austrian ice hockey champion with the Black Wings Linz in the 2011/12 season after excellent performances. In November 2012 he was released from the Black Wings due to poor performance and a catch rate below 90%.

In January 2013 Westlund signed a contract until the end of the season with the Heilbronner Falken in the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey .

In the 2013/14 season he played briefly with the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL , before moving to the Croatian club KHL Medveščak Zagreb in January 2014 .

During the 2014/15 season he was under contract with China Dragon in Shanghai and ended his playing career after the season.

Career as a coach

As early as January 2013, Westlund was employed as a goalkeeping coach at Pro Crease Goaltending, a provider of training programs and camps, between his player engagements abroad. In July 2015, the Augsburg Panthers from the German Ice Hockey League signed him as goalkeeping coach. For the 2016/17 season he moved in the same position to KHL Medveščak Zagreb from the Continental Hockey League .

Special successes

Although an average of 36 shots per game were fired at him in the 2007/08 season , Westlund managed to lead the goalkeeper statistics of the Austrian ice hockey league by catch rate both in the regular season and in the playoff . In the playoff he even reached 94.65%, but injured himself in the penultimate game, so that his backup Klemen Mohorič had to take over. His team HDD Olimpija Ljubljana then lost the final series.

In March of the 2009/10 season Westlund was voted MVP of the Austrian Bundesliga by the Austrian media .
