Jan Marco Leimeister (born April 7, 1974 in Bietigheim-Bissingen ) is a German university professor for business informatics . He is full professor for business informatics and director at the Institute for business informatics (IWI-HSG) at the University of St.Gallen and is also director at the Scientific Center for Information Technology Design ( ITeG ) at the University of Kassel .

Life

Jan Marco Leimeister studied economics with a focus on business informatics at the University of Hohenheim , where he also earned his doctorate with distinction in the field of business informatics on the subject of systematic development, introduction and operation of virtual communities. From 2004 to 2008 he worked as a research assistant at the Technical University of Munich , Institute for Computer Science, Chair for Business Information Systems. He completed his habilitation in 2008 with a thesis on product service systems / hybrid value creation in the healthcare industry.

In 2008, Leimeister was appointed to the University of Kassel . He holds the chair for business informatics (since 2012 part-time) at the University of Kassel, member of the departments of economics and electrical engineering / computer science and director of the scientific center for information technology design ITeG . Leimeister leads research groups on crowdsourcing , service engineering, IT innovation management, learning and knowledge management as well as mobile & ubiquitous computing and is responsible for various EU, federal, state and industry-financed projects.

Since 2012 Leimeister has also been a professor for business informatics and since 2014 full-time professor and director of the institute for business informatics at the University of St. Gallen .

Research and Teaching

Leimeister's research focuses on digital business, digital transformation, service research, crowdsourcing, digital work, collaboration engineering and IT innovation management. He teaches on these topics in various executive education programs. Leimeister advises numerous companies and public institutions on these topics, including the federal government . On September 3, 2018, as a renowned expert in the field of crowdsourcing and digital work, he answered questions from Chancellor Angela Merkel and members of the Federal Cabinet at the Federal Government's future talk at Schloss Meseberg .

Research stays have taken him to the University of Maryland, Columbia University, University of Queensland, University of California, Berkeley and Harvard University.

Leimeister was Program Chair at the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) 2014, General Manager of the Business Information Systems (WI) Conference 2017 in St.Gallen as Co-Conference Chair and Program Chairs of the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) 2019. He is a member of the AIS Senior Scholar College as well as active in committees of various high-level information systems / business informatics journals (European Journal of Information Systems EJIS, Journal of Information Technology JIT Journal of Management Information Systems JMIS and Journal Business & Information Systems Engineering BISE). From July 2017 to July 2019, Leimeister took over the chairmanship of the Scientific Commission for Business Informatics (WKWI) in the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration (VHB).

Awards and honors

  • 2019: 4th place among the most research-oriented business administration professors based on the publication performance of the last 5 years and 8th place in the ranking of life's works, measured by the publication performance since the start of their career (of 2,824 business administration researchers examined) in the ranking of the magazine Wirtschaftswoche .
  • 2014: 13th place of all business administration professors based on the publication performance of the last 5 years (of over 2600 investigated researchers from D / A / CH) in the ranking of the Handelsblatt magazine .
  • 2012: Business IT specialist under the age of 40 with the strongest research and 31st place among the strongest research professors in business administration based on the publication performance of the last 5 years (from over 3000 investigated researchers from D / A / CH) in the ranking of the Handelsblatt magazine .
