Matthias Trattnig (born April 22, 1979 in Graz ) is a former Austrian ice hockey player who played for 14 years at EC Red Bull Salzburg in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League .

Career

Trattnig, who initially played as a right winger and was only retrained as a defender in 2009, attended the Academic Gymnasium in Graz . He began his ice hockey career at EC Graz before moving abroad. Trattnig played four years for the University of Maine in the National Collegiate Athletic Association , which he won with his team in 1999, then two years for Djurgårdens IF in the Elitserien and one year each for the Kassel Huskies in the German Ice Hockey League and in the American Hockey League for the Syracuse Crunch .

He returned to Austria in 2005 and has since played for EC Red Bull Salzburg, with whom he became Austrian champions in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018 . In 2014, participation in the playoff final was enough, as the victorious final opponent HC Bozen as an Italian team could win the league but not the national championship title. In 2006, 2007 and 2008 Trattnig took part in the KELLY'S All-Star-Game of the ÖEHL. In 2010 he won the Continental Cup with the Salzburg team , and was awarded the title of top scorer. From 2011 to 2013 he was the captain of the Red Bulls.

On April 12, 2019, he played his 786th and last game in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga .

International

In the junior division, Trattnig only played for Austria at the U18 C-European Championship in 1996 . He made his debut in the men's national team on April 16, 1999 in a 3-1 win over Ukraine in Kiev . He then played for Austria at the World Championships in the top division in 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 , 2003 , 2004 , 2005 , 2007 , 2009 , when the Alpine nationals only had to relegate because the German team won 1-0 was, as the host of the next World Cup, had automatic participation rights and thus ousted the Austrians from the top division despite better placement, and in 2011 . 2006 , 2008 , 2010 , when he was named the best defender of the tournament and was also the best scorer among defenders with nine points, and in 2012 , when he was not only named best defender again, but also made it into the All-Star Team of the tournament was appointed, he took part in the World Championships of Division I. He also represented his colors at the qualifying tournaments for the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics , 2010 and 2014, as well as at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City and 2014 in Sochi itself.
