Tom Wandell (born January 29, 1987 in Södertälje ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with Örebro HK from Svenska Hockeyligan since May 2016 .
Career
Wandell began his career at the age of 15 in the youth department of the Swedish Elitserien club Södertälje SK . First with the U18 juniors, then later in the U20 team. There, after several mixed years, he completed his best year in the 2005/06 season with 39 scorer points in 41 games for the U20 team. Previously, he had already been selected in the fifth round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft in 146th place by the Dallas Stars , although he had missed large parts of the 2004/05 game year because of a ruptured cruciate ligament . In the course of the 2005/06 season Wandell also came for the first time for the senior team in the Elitserien and played six games in which he did not get any points. After the team's relegation to the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan , the trained center left the club and switched to the Finnish SM-liiga to Ässät Pori , who were in cooperation with the Dallas Stars , for the 2006/07 season . There the striker played 50 of 56 possible games, but despite his twelve points scorer - including six goals - could not prevent Pori from finishing the season as penultimate in the league.
In the 2007/08 season , the Dallas Stars made use of their right and brought the Swede to North America after they had him signed a three-year contract in May 2007. During the season, they put the 20-year-old mainly on their farm team , the Iowa Stars , in the American Hockey League . In addition to 53 games for the Iowa Stars, in which he revealed great difficulties in adapting to the North American style of play, Wandell also played in three games for the Idaho Steelheads from the ECHL . While he was able to score three goals in the three ECHL encounters, things went less well in the AHL, where he only scored 19 points. Since the striker's problems were not hidden from the management and coaching staff of the Dallas Stars, they decided in summer 2008 to send Wandell back to his homeland. They loaned him to Timrå IK from the Elitserien. After he had a good start to the season there with 24 points in the first 28 games and the Dallas Stars had to contend with both injury concerns and a poor start to the NHL season , they brought Wandell in a rather unusual step on May 5. December 2008 from Europe back to North America. Five days later, he made his National Hockey League debut against the Phoenix Coyotes and scored his first goal against the Detroit Red Wings on December 12th . After four games for Dallas, he was sent back to Timrå on December 17th.
Due to the NHL lockout, Wandell played for Severstal Tscherepowez in the Continental Hockey League (KHL) between October and December 2012 . He then returned to the Dallas Stars, but was subsequently also used in the AHL with the Texas Stars . Since his contract expired after the 2012/13 season, he left the club and was signed by HK Spartak Moscow from the KHL. After the 2013/14 season, Spartak withdrew from the KHL game operations and Wandell moved within the league to HK Awangard Omsk . The move to Admiral Vladivostok followed in December 2014 in exchange for Felix Schütz .
In June 2015, Wandell was again part of a swap deal that included a total of twelve players and two transfer rights, and was given to Amur Khabarovsk . He returned to his home country for the 2016/17 season after signing a two-year contract with Örebro HK from Svenska Hockeyligan in May 2016 . In January 2018, his contract was extended by three years.
International
At the international level, Wandell represented his home country at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2004 in Minsk, Belarus . There he reached with the Swedish national team after a third place in the preliminary round and a subsequent quarter-final defeat only the fifth place in the final classification. In six tournament games he remained goalless and pointless, but received four penalty minutes.
